How Can An Infected Thumb Be Treated?

Hi- I have an infected thumb, where the side of my nail meets the skin. There is no open wound. It is not an ingrown nail. It is VERY tender, a bit swollen, warm and a tinge of yellowish color where the brunt of the pain is located. Since there is no opening wound, I m not sure if I can self treat this. Anything over the counter you d recommend, or do I need to see a doctor? Would my GP be the doctor to call? Thank you in advance. Patti Meihls

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The description you have given suggestive of a condition called “paronychia” there is obvious pus collection underneath the nail bed and it has to be drained.

Consult a general surgeon and get it drained, nothing much to worry as it will be done under local anaesthesia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
