Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an abscess on my right ankle. I have been told that a pressure bandage or Uniboot would quickly promote healing. The excruciating pain that accompanies these treatments makes for more than, uncomfortableness ! Pouring lighter fluid and/or the feeling of broken glass rubbing on my ankle is so much more than uncomfortableness that I can t seem to convey the amount of pain these treatments cause. Any helpful feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
Treatment for ankle joint abscess usually involves creating a cut to let the pus drain out. It is done with utmost care by using local anaesthesia to ensure that you do not feel any pain. Sometimes, sedatives may also be required if the ankle joint abscess has grown too large. After the pus is completely drained out, it is covered with sterile cloth and antiseptic solution to avoid any infection. The cavity left behind after treatment is filled with packaging to minimize bleeding and is left for a couple of days. You will need to take care of dressing regularly at home after the treatment. In most of the cases, people can get relief from pain and infection. However, if you still feel any pain; doctor can provide you some pain relief medicines. Follow-up for Ankle Joint Abscess
It is important to follow all the instructions carefully provided by your doctor. Sometimes, doctor may allow you to remove your bandage and packaging on your own at home with some clear instructions about flushing and soaking. Make sure you do not miss any appointments post treatment for ankle joint abscess. Let your doctor know about any symptoms of swelling, fever or increased pain in the ankle region.
