General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Alopecia areata is also known as spot baldness. It is an autoimmune disease in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. It is usually lost from the scalp and occurs due to the body's failure to recognize its own body cells and subsequent destruction of its own tissue.
If the affected region is small, it is better to only observe the progression. Because hair usually grows back within a year, such cases might not require any treatment.
In cases of severe hair loss, corticosteroids namely clobetasol or fluocinonide creams and corticosteroid injections are tried, but has shown to have limited success.
Oral corticosteroids administration can decrease the hair loss, but only for the period during which they are taken. However, these steroids can cause serious side effects with long term use.
Kindly consult Dermatologist for appropriate evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
