Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was stung by a wasp on the inside of my wrist at 6 pm Tuesday night (it is now 5 am wed). The arm is getting swollen and red higher and higher up my arm...right now it is near by elbow crease. I had a spider bite on my stomach about 5 weeks ago where my entire belly area was very red and swollen. When I went to clinic was given a cortisol shot and tetanus shot and put hydrocortisone cream on the belly. Concerning my wrist bite, I called my insurance on-call nurse and she said it should be swollen only around bite area, but this is entire top portion of arm. She suggested going to ER but I don t want to do this unless necessary. What does a cortisol shot do for an insect bite? I thought it was only for joint pain. Please advise what you think I need to do and what might help with the swelling/pain (I have taken ibuprofen and Claritin and am icing it and applying alloy Vera.). Thank you.

How Can A Wasp Sting On The Wrist Be Treated?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise. In wasp bite, severity of reactions varies person to person depending upon the immune response. In your case within 12 hours swelling and redness is extended which requires immediate medical attention. Go to ER at the earliest. You will need anti histamine and cortisone IV shots immediately. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards Dr. Hiren
