How Can A Red Rash On The Ankles And Lower Legs Be Treated?

For several years, have had intermittant deep red rashes (isolated spots no larger than 2 cm s) only ankles & lower legs. No pain, slight occasional itching. Took several weeks to heal. Have one lesion now on lower leg started several months ago, now crusting, cracking, deep red, almost purple and circular, about 6 -7 cm s. Recently started 4 small lesions on right wrist. First time outside lower legs. Some swelling on lower legs could be caused by tight socks. I m 84 y/o male, otherwise good health to my knowledge.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your case history of red rash on the ankle, my treatment advice is:

1. Do not squeeze the lesions as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like Fusiderm cream on it.
3. Take a vitamin C supplement for 3 months.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotic and oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
