How Can A Nail Prick Injury On The Foot Be Treated?

Stepped on a small nail 12 days ago - nail went through boot and sock. Cleaned it - little bleeding. No problem for some time and then the area of foot began to hurt when walking. Went to urgent care - took x-rays - nothing found. Yes I ve had recent tetanus booster. Today after soaking foot in Epsom Salts and warm water the area around the puncture bled when a little pressure was used and there was some pus - not much. I feel fine - no fever. Should I continue with soaks - do I need to see a doctor. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Any kind of wound should be taken care for infection else the healing is natural process and it takes some time. Now as long as the wound care is concern it is to be cleaned with antiseptic solution or Povidone wash.

If infection is found, then antibiotic is must and best antibiotic is Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid twice in day for five days.

Foot Injury is highly vulnerable for infection, and one need to be very conscious if healing is not taking place and pain, swelling, increased, then it needs to be seen by the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain
