Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
6 weeks ago I hit the top knuckle of my pointer finger and it hurt very bad. It has been reddish/purple ever since. I had it x rayed and it is not broken. But it s not going away. How long will it stay like this and what can I do to speed up the process?
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Hematoma after finger injury, even if there is no fracture may persist for up to 2 months, especially if there was tendon or ligament injury. I think that you should apply heparin ointment, rest, and take painkillers. In cases of pain or limited motions you should have cast immobilization applied. If pain and hematoma persist for more than 2 months it would be good to have MRI scan to see if tendons or capsule or unnoticed fracture are present since prolonges symptoms may suggest something of it. But in most cases it subsides spontaneously.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us.
Wishing you good health.
