How Can I Withdraw From Ativan And Start Taking Buspar?

I am female in my 70 s and have been taking Ativan or such for many years and would like to stop this kind of drug. Need something to help me slowly taper off. I was in the ER recently from the side effects of Celexa, not good. Now they are recommending Buspar. Could you please comment , thank you.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

BuSpar (Buspirone), anti-anxiety medicine can be used for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. Prolonged use of Ativan (Lorazepam) may result in dependence. Not to stop taking Ativan abruptly as serious withdrawal symptoms may occur. Try to withdraw it gradually under supervision of your physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. T.K. Biswas
