How Can Hashimoto S Thyroiditis Be Treated?

Hello! I have recently been diagnosed with Hashimotos but have not yet started medication because a rheumatologist had started me first on Plaquenil for potential RA. Given that medication takes up to six months to see the full effect, I didn t want to mix meds until I hit the six month mark. It appears that the Hashimotos medicine is a hormone replacement, true? I had blood clots ( both DVTs and PEs) after ankle surgery almost two years ago. Should I be concerned about this medication?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In hashimoto thyroiditis there is usually deficiency of thyroid hormone but some patients have normal levels also.If the patient hormone levels are low then synthetic thyroid hormone is given as treatment.Thyroid hormone has very less side effects and are usually started with low doses. So u need not worry about hormone replacement as it is very safe approach.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
