How Can GERD Be Treated?

I am a 61 year old female with GERD and a 5 centimeter hiatal hernia. My gastro doctor referred me to a surgeon to have the hernia repaired and have the fundoplication procedure. My GERD is controlled with Dexilant and I only occasionally have symptoms. My question is do I need to have the fundo surgery or can I just have the hernia repaired.
