High BP readings usually on going for the checkup at doctor's place. Always very nervous before the test. Does that matter?

Hi, every time I go to the doctor I usually see a top number blood pressure reading between 140 and 144. Is this something I should be concerned about? I realize it should probably be lower than that. The thing is, I m always very nervous when I go to the doctor s office for anything. My lower number blood pressure readings are usually lower than 80. I m only 21.

Hello and thanks for writing in at HCM
I am a jr. to Cardiologist in India. I have a detail view if your mail and wants to clear your queries. There are very less possibility of Hypertension at the age of 21. As you have explained you are nervous when you go to the doctor's cabin. This nervousness is the cause of your high blood pressure and is called "White Coat induced Hypertension". So don't worry about it at all. You can take your own electronic digital BP apparatus and measure your BP at home and I am 100% sure it shows normal value.
But you have Family History and Overweight than you have to take extra precautions like:
1. Maintain your weight according to your height. Loose your weight if overweight.
2. Don't smoke and if you smoke than stop smoking
3. Check your lipid profile once in a year
4. Do regular exercise at least once 5 days per week.
5. Avoid Fatty or oily food.
Follow the advises and you will be away for Cardiologist for lifetime.
Best Wishes
