Hello Doctor. I am a 68 year young female with recently diagnosed Charcot Marie Tooth disease. Unfortunately, I did not have a much earlier diagnosis due to not wanting to be diagnosed with an"pre existing" condition and not able to get insurance. As you would expect it has progressively worsened - neuropathy, extreme nerve pain, broken bones, cellulitis, etc. I am not diabetic, however, I recently developed a thick band of calloused tissue on the ball of my right foot, great toe and under the adjoining two toes that is accompanied by swelling and areas where the skin has broken down and large layers are peeling off leaving areas of new skin and bleeding. So, my question - I feel that may also have scleroderma. My reasoning is that I have several indented areas on my forehead and scalp; the pigment in my skin has migrated to areas that are heavily pigmented and areas of transparency; over the years, I have had areas of hardened skin on my legs and arms that in time resolved; I have arthritis-like symptoms in my hands, neck and jaw, I am slightly anemic, and for the past several weeks, my geographic tongue has become very sensitive and has turned very purple-red. So I don't want to be viewed as a hypochondriac, but are there specific tests that can give a definitive diagnosis? I recently relocated to a very small town in New Mexico and have a new primary care physician. There is a Rheumatologist within driving distance in another state, but she only accepts patients who have already been diagnosed through testing. I don't think my PC is really interested in treating anything too complex, but would request testing that could be suggested for a referral. What should I do next?
