Head Injury, Momentary Blackness And Ringing In Ears, Swelling Increasing. Advise?
my son took a massive hit to the side of his bare head with a baseball 6 days ago. It made his eyes roll into his head and then he saw all black and heard ringing. it took about five minutes for his senses to return and for him to be able to get off the ground. The swelling on the side of his head is increasing even though he passed a concussion test on Monday. Should I take him back in?
The swelling over the head is due to accumulation of fluid or blood (hematoma). The blood cells accumulated are eventually broken down and absorbed in the body. But this is a slow process & takes times to disappear completely.
Till that time, symptomatic relief is obtained by giving analgesics, ice compression & adequate rest.
However, if the swelling still persists or associated with symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, loss of consciousness, convulsions, etc. then it will be better to consult a Neurophysician. Investigations like X ray & CT scan of the brain will be helpful to rule out any intra cranial pathology.
There is no need to worry, he will be fine.
Wishing him a good health. Thanks & take care.
