Have Intra Articular Fracture In Finger. Scheduled For ORIF With Wire Fixation. Have Full Flexion With Tightness

Yes I have an impacted intra articular fracture at the base of the right ring finger that is comminuted. My fall occurred on 8/31. I am scheduled for ORIF with K wire fixation. At the present I have full flexion.,,,but I have a sensation of tightness. My pain is probably a 1. There is a rotation in the a.m. where the ring finger crosses over the pinky. As the day progresses I have full flexion where I can flex my ring finger to my palm. I am concern about the risks of this surgery and whether I really needed it and what if I do not have the surgery. I worked in health care as a transcriptionist. My surgeon did not tell me if this wire will have to be taken out. I also suffered a hairline fracture to the wrist and was in a cast but the surgeon removed this. I feel good and worried if it do the surgery I may have no use of my dominant hand

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

If you leave the fracture untreated (without undergoing surgery), Propably you may develop certain degree of deformity and stiffness in the involved finger.

Every surgery will carry its own risks which are inherent to the procedure (though they may be very minor). Generally the K-wires will be pulled out once the fracture unites, roughly at about 4 weeks duration.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Moustafa Saeed's  Response
Hi:
thank you for your question

if you have comminuted fracture intra-articular then surgery is advisable to restore the anatomical shape of the joint and treat the rotation deformity in the finger.

you can always explain to your doctor about your feeling about the procedure and he/she may agree with you if apropriate.

kind regards
