hi welcome to HCM
-i had gone through your query and understand your concerns.. i would come up with two possibilities of your husband,

1.Painless swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem, especially among older people.
swelling of the ankle is the cause in cases of
- Being overweight,
- Blood clot in the leg
-Increased age causes venous incompetence-Veins in the legs that cannot properly pump blood back to the heart.

avoid long standing positions, constant sitting positions are advisable

2.the another possibility for back pain may be LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS; is due degenerative changes in the lumbar spine

-x-ray for lumbar spine may confirm the diagnosis

I find this answer helpful
