Does Unvaccinated Dog Carry Rabies Virus?

Hi! I have a 4-month old Schnauzer and he scratched me with his teeth. He has not had an anti-rabies shot yet. There is nothing but a puncture wound and it s not big in fact you won t see it if you don t look close enough or if I don t point out the spot to you. Will it effect me?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The unvaccinated dog may carry rabies virus in the saliva. Though your wound is not that deep to worry about the threat of transmitting the rabies virus, it is best recommended to:
- Clean the wound with copious amount of tap water running over the wound
- Sterile dressing with gauze swab and Neomycin cream
- Consult your primary care for need of anti rabies vaccine if he or she decides for the same

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
