Does Taking Sumatriptan And Effexor Together Cause Adverse Side Effects?

I was prescribed Sumatriptan 100mg for Migraine headaches and I took one 2 hrs ago, at the onset. Upon reading the medication information, I discovered that it is contraindicated for persons who are taking a SSNRI. I am taking Effexor ER 37.5 mg. I took my Effexor this am, approx 8 hrs before I took the Sumatriptan. Please advise me as to what I should do or expect. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, it is not safe to take these medications together.

Taking Sumatriptan together with Effexor drug can increase the risk of a serious condition called the Serotonin syndrome which is characterized by confusion, hallucination, seizure, increased blood pressure and heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, blurred vision, muscle stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In its severe form it may result in coma and even death. You should consult your doctor for an alternate effective medications or possible dose reduction to prevent this harmful interaction.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
