Does Smoking Cause Severe Coughing?

I m almost 20 years old and have only smoked intermittently for about a year. I m guessing maybe 10-13 packs over the course of the last year, maybe less. My allergies were worse this summer and I had some difficulty breathing so I decided to quit. Especially since I ve started exercising. I had my last one a week ago. Last night I went to the sauna at the ymca after my workout and they had it too hot and it felt like I was breathing in water because of the humidity so I got out after a few seconds but I couldn t get any air in there. Since that happening last night I haven t been able to stop coughing. Could there have been any severe affects from the past smoking I ve done?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi welcome to health care magic...

Your symptoms yes might from previous smoking habit or it can be allergy ...

Your work up needed with ....
-Auscultation
-CBC with AEC count
-Chest x ray
-If needed spirometry done for assess severity or to rule out asthma or bronchitis like condition etc..

For allergy Allegra LC like drug needed

If rhochi heard in auscultation than you might needed bronchodilator nebulization...

As you had smoking history x ray will help in rule out pulmonary fibrosis ...

Take care

Advise : Consult pulmonologist with keeping this in mind and than specific treatment given accordingly
