Does Smoking Cause Persistent Cough And Laryngitis?

I ve had a persistent cough for about 3 1/2 months. It mostly effects me at night when trying to sleep and in the morning when I first wake up. I ll admit I m a smoker. Guess you could say I ve been smoking my whole life, my parents smoked when I was a child and then I picked up smoking, I m 39. There s no blood or mucus when I cough. Just an annoying dry cough. Now for the last 3 weeks, I ve had laryngitis. I haven t gone to a doctor or e.r. due to no insurance and we just don t have the extra money for a medical payment. I haven t tried any over the counter meds, I don t want to use a cough suppressant and possibly develop into something worse. I m getting desperate. Thanks for any advise Jody Jensen

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Jody,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Well, smoking per say does not cause persistent cough or laryngitis. It causes irritation and decreased mobility of cilia of mucosa of upper respiratory tract, which would lead to stagnation of mucous and superseded by infection causing laryngitis and symptoms like cough.
Kindly quit smoking, as that would be the permanent solution.
To overcome cough, you can take mucolytic agents like syrup containing Bromhexine with Chlorpheniramine maleate.
For laryngitis problem, you can do salt water gargling with warm water. You can also take medicated lozenges. In case it doesn't subside, you may need to take a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin.
Avoid consumption of cold items like cool drinks and ice cream tillnthe symptoms subside completely.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
