Does Prolonged Intake Of Statins Cause Type 2 Diabetes?

Hi, I have been on statins for quite a few years and have been hearing some negative things about this drug. I have heard that it can bring on type 2 diabetes and I now am diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. There has been no relative on either side of my family that ever had type 2 diabetes or type 1. I recently started having a pretty bad problem of short term memory loss so much that my daughter was quite concerned about me. That has since improved but all my doctor did was take me off of one statin and put me on another. I really do not want to be on them at all as I am afraid of having short term memory issues again and continue getting worse on my diabetes. I do not have to take injections yet for the diabetes. What to do about statins?

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
Yes prolonged intake of statins is associated with increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However development of type 2 diabetes is multi-factorial & factors like obesity, lack of exercise, genetics play important role in that. Therefore it would be wrong to say that only statin intake has caused you diabetes.
As per intake of statins, hypercholesteremia( high cholesterol in blood) is associated with high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, stroke etc. Therefore Statins may be continued if your doctor feels statins would be necessary in keeping your cholesterol levels down.
You should decrease intake of fats by choosing baking, steaming or boiling type of cooking in foods. Fried foods should better be avoided. Intake of trans fats such as partially hydrogenated fats or animal fats should be avoided. Light regular exercise such as walking, cycling etc should be done on regular basis. Fibers in diet should be increased. These methods would help you to keep cholesterol down. Thereby dose of statins may be decreased if your cholesterol levels comes to normal.
