Does Non Diabetic Neuropathy Cause Swelling In The Feet And Ankles?

Does non diabetic Neuropathy cause your feet, ankles and lower legs to swell? What is the best treatment for this? I can hardly wear shoes that are closed at the toe and every shoe hurts my feet except a few. What should I do? Also after sitting during the day or driving when I stand my feet hurt for a while after walking again. YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Autonomic Neuropathy due to any cause can cause swelling of the feet and legs. This swelling is minimal in the morning and increases by evening, due to the dependent position of the legs. In neuropathy, the skin of the feet and legs usually become dry. Please apply a skin softner like Vaseline, on the plantar and dorsal surface of the feet and the legs, at-least twice a day. The best way to prevent edema formation is, in the morning, when the swelling is minimal, after applying Vaseline, wear properly fitting compression stockings from toes to the knees. Please wear it throughout the day, and remove it before going to sleep, when you can apply Vaseline once again. Please always use soft, pressure distributing insoled footwear. Materials like EVA, Poron, Silicon, Plastazote are good. Inserts of these materials can be places in the footwear. This will prevent callus formation and protect your feet from any injury.
