Hello and Welcome to HCM!
You asked if your anemia could be caused by drinking a few times a week. It is possible that could have irritated your stomach enough to cause a bleeding gastric ulcer. Your doctor did the appropriate thing and reffered you to both a hematologist and for a colonoscopy.

Your blood work indicates a possible bleed, but from where that is the question. All your labs point to that. You have a low MCHC, Red Cell Count, Low Saturation, High MCV yet normal B12 with a low Hemoglobin and high iron. Granted, folate wasn't tested, but the pattern is indicatative of a bleed.

Trust in the process. All will get well. Please consider counseling to discontinue the alcohol. All my best. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
