Does Intake Of Emergency Contraceptive Pill Cause Irregular Periods?

I ve been really worried this past month. around April 3rd my partner and i had unprotected sex 3 days in a row so i took the morning after pills for 2 days in a row. A week later i got my period (which was a bit early) and it was red fresh blood and laster about 5-6 days. After this, a month and a half goes by and i get my period again (MAY) but this time is is brown from the start to the end of the cycle (about 5-6 days) and is very very light, i didn t think too much of this because i have had brown discharge when i was 13 from a hormonal imbalance and i have been put on hormonal medication but refused to take them as i saw my cycle was improving over the years. Now i have not gotten my periods since May and it is July, 3 days ago a got about 3 drops off brown discharge again and i thought this would be my period starting but that was it and today i got a few drops again of brown discharge. I was worried i might be pregnant but i had sex 3 months ago and never got the early symptoms , i took 3 dipstick pregnancy tests and they all tested negative.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The emergency pill may cause a delay or an early coming of the next menstrual period but should not affect the periods after that. So, because you are missing your periods for almost three months now with only irregular spotting in a few cases, it is important that you have a visit with your doctor to determine the cause.

A gynecological visit and transvaginal ultrasound will be conducted and also some blood tests. Only after the results of these tests and examinations will the doctor be able to determine further management.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
