Does Herpes Simplex Virus Cause Recurrent Sore Throat And Mouth Ulcers?

Hello. My 21 year old daughter has been very ill for 2weeks. She had to leave college because of extreme fatigue, fever, headache. We went to an urgent care...was prescribed amoxicillin. She got sicker. We went to our family doctor...he prescribed arithromycin for extreme tonsillitis. She had white pussy sores all over her tonsils. She did not improve. We took her to the ER where they did blood work and she tested positive for mono. She now has been on steroids for 4 days. She is improving slowly, but here s my question. She has the herpes simplex virus and often gets severe cold sores on her mouth. About 6 months ago a dermatologist prescribed Valcyclovir to be taken every day which she does. Just wondering if this virus is responsible for reeking this recent episode in her throat. What can we do better to build her immunity to be able to fight the virus ? She is otherwise very healthy.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well, it seems that your daughter have an inflammation in throat secondary to infection and it is leading to swollen tonsils causing Tonsillitis..
As she is tested positive for Mono it is a viral infection but it looks like there is superseded bacterial infection.
As you have started taking steroids since 4 days there is improvement.
It is however not due to herpes virus and another strain of virus is responsible for Mono.
As of now she should continue taking medication as advised to her and also take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen if pain is severe..
She can gargle with warm saline solution..
She can chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..
She can avoid spicy and hard foods and take a soft bland diet with plenty of fluids..
For improving immunity taking nutritious diet, vitamins and regular exercise is always helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
