Does Elevated RAIU Scan Result Indicate Thyroiditis?

Thyroiditis or Graves? Had a well checkup and mentioned Thyroid problems in family history. Bloodwork was done and showed TSH .007 and Free T4 was 1.74. Went for a RAIU and scan.. Uptake was slightly elevated (18%) at 6 hours and normal at 24 hours, scan was normal. Second set of bloodwork shows TSH still suppressed but T4 came down to 1.55. My primary Dr suspects Thyroiditis not Graves. I have no symptoms other than heat intolerance , but I am 50 and in menopause. From my research, it suggests that thyroiditis would have a low uptake, but mine was normal.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Raised T4 and lowered TSH indicates that you may be suffering from Thyrotoxicosis, RAIU is also increased.
Thyroiditis also can show similar picture but then one gets enlarged thyroid gland. The blood tests of Antithyroglobulin antibody test will be positive.
Graves disease is severe form of thyrotoxicosis.
Heat intolerance indicates that you have raised thyroid hormone levels.
Get treated properly and you will be fine.
Take a second opinion of an Endocrinologist if required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
