Does Accidental Intake Of Molten Plastic Pieces Cause Side Effects?

Is it harmful to eat melted plastic. It was a garlic bread in foil from the store. It was put in the oven with the foil and there was plastic liner which melted on the bread. It looked like it was only the bottom half that had the plastic melted so I ate the top half. After I realized that there may have been small bits of melted plastic in the piece I had eaten. Should I be worried about it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Most plastic is inert and non-toxic. It will not harm you unless you eat a piece big enough to choke on. Your stomach won't digest it and it will come out in due time when you pass stools.
However, some plastic can release toxins when heated. But, these days, plastic food wrap is usually made from Polyethylene, which does not release any harmful fumes or substances.
Single episode of accidental intake of burnt plastic is harmless and there is no cause for concern.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Wish you good health.
