Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
OK....again.....My brother age 65 has an acute condition. Looks like an upper abdominal wall hernia and a life changing SOB acute, over night. Just wondering if the proximity of the hernia would affect the diaphragm? All his labs are normal, including amalyse and lipase. It pooches out upon being vertical but in the recombient position flattens out so it doesn t show on CT scans. Typical of some hernias. He s exhausted all his local doctor s choices. Just hoping you can shed some light on this. Please advise
It is generally a hiatal hearnia (movement of the bowel in the chest space through the diaphragmatic opening for the digestive tube, that may cause shortness of breath. Even in this case, the shortness of breath is gradual and not of instant onset. An abdominal hernia is almost unlikely to affect the breathing. Thus, your brother needs to have his lungs and heart checked to make sure which is the cause of his shortness of breath as it seems less likely it is due to the abdominal hernia.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
