Does Xanax Have Short Half Life?

Hello, I have had 2 seizures in the past 8 years. I was taking Xanax 2mg. 2 times daily. I ran out early both times, and was taken to the emergency room both times. I did some research on Xanax, and discovered it has a very short half-life, so it doesn t stay in my system very long. It works fast and leaves my system fast. I have switched to Clonazepam, which has a half life of up to 60-80 hours, whereas Xanax is about 4-8 hours. I have run out of my Klonopin several times due to self-medicating on several occasions. When this happens I have several BAD side effects, which include irregular gait, speech, teeth grinding, problems with balance, and holding on to walls as to not fall down. However these symptoms are controlled nicely if I take my Klonopin as directed, and do not run out. Are these symptoms of stroke OR another seizure? Regards, Joseph DeCapua/ Royal Oak, MI.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

These symptoms are more suggestive of withdrawal symptoms of the drug rather a fit.

You ate right that Xanax has a short half-life and Klonipin is a long-acting drug but to be honest, neither of these drugs are good for seizures control and their longtime use is not recommended.

I would suggest you should gradually taper your Klonipin in few months and take proper medicine for seizures if there are any. This all would be done by your doctor who may better advise how to do this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
