Does Triazolam Cause Elevated Symptoms Of Paranoid Schizophrenia?

My son has been diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic for the last 20 or more years. In recent months, he seems to lose touch with relity and cannnot keep up with things at all. Somedays, he makes all sorts of statements that have nothing at all to do with what is being discussed. This can be so bad that you cannot communicate with him. This may go on for a few days and then he snaps out of it and reverts back to his normal behavior with his usual conspiracy theories, etc. He takes ativan three times per day, fanapt twice perday and 2 trizoliam in the evenings with his thrid dose of ativan. I noticed a difference after he started the triazolam and he has gradually worsened until his recent spells. He says sometimes he feels like he is sleep walking and can barely remem ber some of what is happening. Could this be related to the triazoliam (Halcion) combined with lorezepam?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As your son is already diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia previously and is on medications for the same. Has he been recently put on triazolam by his doctor?

Triazolam is advice mainly for insomnia and it has different adverse effects which are common but doctors prescribe it for it’s more benefits than the side effects like any other drug.

Your son felt like he was sleepwalking, did you see him sleepwalking? I would suggest you to visit the psychiatrist and mention about this to him because there might be need of dose adjustment depending on the different effects your son is having after he started taking it and it might or might not be related to traizolam.

His doctor can best analyze everything regarding his current situation and guide you better with further management as he knows your son’s history and course of illness.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
