Does Sertraline Interact With Guanfacine?

My daughter, Sadie has been on setraline 50mg for several month, for anxiety. Her psychiatrist just added 1mg of guanfacine for ADD. He has tried other ADD medications in the past with horrible side effects. When I put in the drub interaction of the 2 medications, it said that the zoloft could increase the effects of the guanfacine, and to watch her carefully. I am a bit worried after reading this, but also know her dr. or the pharmacist pick up on drug interactions. Can you advise me if this is ok? Kindly, Kristin

Hello Kristin,
I understand your concern for your daughter who is on Zoloft (sertraline) and guanfacine. And as you have said, these two drugs have a significant interaction and the patients has to be monitored very closely.
Zoloft can increase the levels of guanfacine in blood by inhibiting it's metabolism. And one precaution that has to be taken from prescriber is to keep the guanfacine dosage low to address this concern.
