Does Pravastatin Interact With Niacin Supplements?

I have just been prescribed pravastatin 10 mg for LDL 124, cholesterol 206. I take niacin supplements and noticed that it is recommended not to take the two together. Can you explain what happens if pravastatin and niacin are taken together, please?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pravastatin and Niacin enhance the effect of one another and should be avoided and not taken together. If taken together there is an increased risk for muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) that can cause muscle pain and can also affect the kidneys (cause kidney dysfunction).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
