Does Oxtellar XR Cause Low Sodium Levels?

I have had problems using Trileptal 300 mg tab. At 600mg am (10 to 11 am) and 600mg pm(10:30 to 11:30 pm) The problem, that arose after using the drug , at the above dosage for over 6 years appeared in the form of a low sodium level situation. Down to as low as 110. Can I expect a similar situation using Oxtellar X R ? The dosage would be 150 mg once daily for two weeks and then an increase to 300 mg once daily.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Trileptal and Oxtellar are brand names for oxcarbazepine.
If trieptal caused low serum sodium (hyponatremia), oxtellar 300 mg may also cause hyponatremia. If you experience symptoms of low serum sodium on oxtellar such as headache, weakness, gait disturbance and somnolence you should contact your doctor. The serum sodium level should be measured. Decreasing dose or discontinuing the drug may be necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
