Does Metoprolol Cause Elevated Blood Pressure Levels?

I have just been transferred to.Metoprolol from atenolol. My first blood pressure reading since the transfer. My bottom BP number has jumped from the high 60s low 70s to 90 degrees. Can this be because of the transfer of medication?? My upper b p number. Has pretty much stayed the same. Thank you Beverly Weiler

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Both metoprolol and atenolol belong to the same group of anti hypertensives, the beta blockers. However the duration of action of Atenolol is more than that of Metoprolol. So while atenolol dose is usually once a day, metoprolol may need to be taken twice a day.
Once a day may not be providing adequate blood pressure control which you have noticed in raised diastolic blood pressure. It may be corrected by taking the tablet twice a day.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
