Does Hydrochlorothiazide Raise Sugar Levels?

My md just said that my blood work indicates that I am prediabetic and I have a meter to take my blood everyday and it is recorded. I also had a severe stroke 7 yrs. ago and take blood pressure meds. The stroke left me with left side weakness. I read that Hydrochlorothiazide can raise sugar levels and I have taken 12.5 dose for years. I am thin, eat fruits and veg. little meat and no family diebetic problems. I sure have trouble with the meter the first time today it read 112 What do you think?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Thiazide diuretics can affect your blood sugar but it is not likely the cause of your prediabetes.

Many of the chronic illnesses tend to occur together so it is common for a person with hypertension to also have other chronic illnesses such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

Persons with prediabetes or those diabetes on oral medication only normally check their blood sugars 3 to 4 times a week at different points during the day but your doctor may want an initial extensive profile.

Your goal is a fasting or before meal of 70 to 130 and a 2 hour of less than 180.

I hope this helps
