Does Hydrochlorothiazide Cause Numbness And Weakness In The Forearms?

I have recently been put on hydrothiazide and lisinipril for high blood pressure. I was advised to take the hydrothiazide for a week before I start the lisinopril. Today, my forearms got numb and weak and my blood pressure went up to 175/108, pulse was 68. My arms feel like they have been overworked, sore and weak. After a half hour, my blood pressure came down to 139/91. Is this a side effect of the hydrothiazide? Should I be concerned?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The medication directly doesn't cause such a side-effects. However it may alter electrolyte levels like lower potassium which in turn may cause such symptoms. It rarely lowers it that much though, it is a very safe drug taken by millions of people without problems, so before attributing it to hydrochlorothiazide I would have an electrolyte panel blood test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
