Does Fosamax Cause Bone Breakage?

I have been on Fosamax for five weeks, following a diagnosis from a bone density scan, of severe osteporosis. A nurse friend told me to research this drug, as she is aware it can cause bone breakage. What do you know aboout this, and how can I get reliable information to discuss with my PCP?

Hello,

The aim of taking Fosamax is actually quite the opposite, it aims to increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures. So your nurse friend should have pointed to that as well.

I assume that your friends refer to some rare cases where Fosamax patients have had necrosis of the jaw or fractures of the femoral bone in atypical places (as it reorganizes bone structure). These cases though are very very rare and the reduction in fracture risk is deemed much more significant than the risk for these atypical fractures.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka,
