Does Diltiazem Cause Constipation?

I am trying to find out if this drug, diltiazem, would be a cause of consitpation? I have A-fib so have been on it along with propafenone, elicit, atorvastatin and estradiol. Does magnesium have any counter affect if I take that for constipation? Do you have any natural supplement recommendations for constipation as I feel some of these drugs are causing this problem. I am 80 years old

Hi,

Yes, Diltiazem is known to cause constipation as its one of the side effects by relaxing the muscles in the gut. There is no documented evidence of any harmful interactions between magnesium and diltiazem hence magnesium may be taken to counter the diltiazem induced constipation. I would recommend some natural supplements to over come the constipation such as senna leaves, psyllium or methylcellulose which help evacuate the bowels.

Besides, you should also have certain life style changes to prevent constipation such as exercise and increased physical activity, drink plenty of water, add fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet, and limit intake of trigger foods, such as fast foods and junk foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
