Does Celiac Disease Or PCOS Cause Excessive Weight Gain?
I have a daughter who is 17 years old. Last April she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Started a gluten free diet immediately after finding out. She started gaining weight fairly rapidly (35 lbs within the last 10 months) and her blood pressure shot up 140/80. she started working with a personal trainer and eating a high protein diet. In December she was diagnosed with PCOS, our doctor started her on Metformin and birth control. She continues to gain weight (6 lbs this week) yet is working out 3-4 times a week and watching what she eats. any suggestions?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Celiac disease is known to cause weight gain. Infact, un-diagnosed celiac disease causes weight loss and the weight improves once gluten free diet is started. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is known to cause weight gain and this is due to hormonal imbalance in body. PCOS is characterized by high testosterone, low LH/FSH ratio and deranged glucose metabolism. Thus, treatment is aimed to normalize the deranged hormones. The treatment given to your daughter is appropriate. Appropriate treatment and weight management will help to maintain weight.
