Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Bacitracin Application Cause Vaginal Yeast Infection?
I am an R.N. I have someone (not in person. Asking advice) about an injury she caused herself on her labia. I explain what to look for in case of infection. She is agoraphobic and has trouble getting to a M.D., N.P. etc. I told her to try bacitracin with sterile gauze and to cover the area. Someone told her no to Bacitracin because it can cause a yeast infection. I know oral antibiotics can cause vaginal candida but I don t believe that can happen with topical antibiotics. Can this happen?
First of all, it's sad to know what your friend had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, yes it can cause candoal infection and local antibiotics are more notorious than oral as it disrupts normal skin layer which has protective layers. My understanding that individual can be prone to infections by fungi.
However, if the infection is the concern she should use it now as waiting for another infection chances you can't leave the primary one untreated.
I would suggest using local aseptic solutions and antibiotics and oral OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. If possible a gynecologist review may also be helpful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
