Do Statins Cause Stiffness In The Joints?

I took a statin for two weeks. After 2 weeks, I woke up with all joints stiff and painful. This has been several months ago. My doctor tested fo RA and lupus but it was negative. Some days I have a hard time moving and want to cry. Can a statin cause lasting effects like this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Statins are not known to cause stiffness of the joints. After having gone through your history I am of the opinion that you seem to have developed myopathy (muscle pain, myositis, muscle tenderness or weakness) apparently caused by the cholesterol lowering medication statin. I advice you to stop taking statins and consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective but a safer medication to lower your high blood cholesterol without causing the the myopathy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
