Do Probiotic Supplements Interact With Lialda?

I take lialda and have been for years. It was prescribed by my doctor. I take 2 a day. I am now taking probiotics along with my medications. Would probiotics lessen my need for lialda or at least help me to drop down to 1 a day? Does probiotic do some of same things to control IBS or colitis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Lialda contains 'mesalamine', which affects a substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage and diarrhea. It is used to treat active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. There are no adverse interactions reported with use of lialda with probiotic supplements.

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for digestive system. Probiotics are often called "good" or "helpful" bacteria as they help to keep the gut healthy. Some of the common conditions they are used as supplements include:

1. Irritable bowel syndrome
2. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
3. Infectious diarrhea (caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites)
4. Antibiotic-related diarrhea

Kindly take the medications as prescribed and do the necessary follow-up.

Hope the information provided would be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
