Do Phlegm-producing Cough, Along With Fatigue And Runny Nose, Require Medical Attention?
I have had a loud cough that produces phlegm for approximately 5 days. I feel tired and occasionally achy. No fever. I have a bit of a runny nose; not much though. I ve been taking it easy and treating myself with lots of liquids and rest. My friends say I should get the cough checked out. The cough is better but still there. Should I see a doctor?
I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.
I think you are having a viral upper airway infection. Runny nose, cough, body aches, tiredness (with or without a fever as in your case) are all symptoms of viral infection.
Viral infections are self-limiting. They do not need antibiotics as antibiotics don’t act against viruses. Most of the viral infections can linger for around 7-9 days. So, I would advise you to continue the rest and fluids for next few days.
In case you start getting a fever, your cough worsens or your phlegm starts turning greenish/yellow or in general you start to feel worse than before, then it means you may be having a super added bacterial infection, and I would suggest you see your doctor then.
I hope this answer has helped you.
