Do Irregular MCHC, Iron Saturation Index And Sodium Levels Require Iron Supplement Intake And A FIT Test Assessment?

I am a 70 year old man. My hemoglobin is 12.8. My MCHC is 31.1. My iron saturation index is 11. My sodium is 145. My albumin is 3.1. My protein total is 6.2. My LDL cholesterol calculated is 109. All my other blood test results are normal. My doctor is recommending that I take an iron supplement and have a FIT test, all which I intend to do. However, I had never had questionable test results before, and I wonder how serious this may be. Can you give me some perspective about this? Thanks.

Hello,

I would appreciate if you post the serum iron levels, ferritin, MCV, MCH and peripheral blood smear report also. However, iron saturation of 11% suggest iron deficiency. Normal iron saturation is above 16%. To correct the iron deficiency, I suggest you to take iron supplementation as per your doctors prescription and get iron profile after completing the iron supplementation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
