Do I Need Antibiotics For Sutures On Upper Lip?

I got 6 stitches in my mouth right above my upper lip last might in the emergency room.. i left with no prescription and barely any info on how to care for it. It didn t dawn to me to ask further questions cause. I just wanted to get out of there quickly since I was there for 5 hours already. My questions are; do i need antibiotics? When can I smoke again? Does gargling salt with warm water any good? The lip area around it has gotten noticeably more swollen than last night, is that normal?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain if you have got stitches inside the mouth just above the upper lip the first thing you should do is to maintain a very good oral hygiene..

As it is normal to get swelling after any surgical or traumatic procedure you need not to worry as the swelling will subside as the healing will proceed and inflammation will reduce..

If i would be your treating doctor i would have definitely prescribed you with antibiotics and painkillers to relieve pain and prevent any infection..

You should also be given a steroid shot like dexamethasone so that you do not get much of swelling and pain..

You should avoid smoking until the healing takes place as the chemicals and heat can lead to delayed healing as well as heal will cause increase in inflammation which can further exaggerate swelling and pain..

You should do warn saline gargles..

Avoid hot and spicy food..

Doing cold compresses can be relieving..

Hope this information helps..
