Do Head Injuries Cause Any Health Hazards?

I was getting ready to take a walk at a park, i was looking down at my watch and hit a tree branch with the top of my head. It kind of dazed me for a sec and i heard a loud thud and so did my wife. It hurt for a second, but it's now two hours later, no headache, no bump. Just feel a little weak probably cause I am nervous. I have an appetite, no nausea, blurred vision, or headache. What scares me is it hit hard and made a loud noise. I don't have any memory issues, and generally feel fine but after reading about seriousness of head injuries I wanted to be safe.

Emergency Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi, Sorry to hear about your accident with the tree branch. When I have patients with the same complaint see me in the emergency department, I ask about their medications like blood thinners. DO you take blood thinners? Do you take aspirin daily? How old are you and what medical problems do you have?

If you do not take any blood thinners and you did not lose consciousness, and you are not confused, nauseous and or vomiting and your pain is not severe then I generally do not recommend any further imaging or workup and I explain to the patient about head injuries and concussions and instruct them to return immediately if they become confused, altered in any way, lose consciousness, have severe pain, nausea or vomiting or other concerning symptoms. I usually explain that they may feel worse the next day but as long as their mental status is normal, not altered and they are not having any other concerning symptoms then they will continue to improve over the next several days.

If the patient experienced the confusion, loss of consciousness and or some of the other symptoms I mentioned then I may recommend CT scan of the brain to rule out intracranial injury like bleeding etc.

Thank you
