Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do Calf Muscles Develop Again After Stopping Lipitor Intake?
My husband is taking lipitor because he had surgery to repair an AAA (aorta abdominal aneurism) 3 weeks ago. He had such great calf muscles, but now they are very small. I was told by a friend whose husband experienced the same thing that it is a side effect of lipitor. Will the muscles develop again once he can get off the drug and start exercising again?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The decrease in calf muscles is likely to be related to disuse atrophy from resting after the surgery and possibly reduction in blood flow after the abdominal aorta surgery rather than the Lipitor. The muscles ought to improve once he starts exercise. Lipitor can produce muscular pain and inflammation. If you suspect these then muscle inflammation can be verified by doing a blood creatinine kinase test.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
