Do Birth Control Contraceptives Cause Excessive Bleeding?

I just started birth control last Sunday at the start of my period. I usually have a pretty light flow throughout the week anyways, but this week there was a also a brown stringy fluid coming out as well. The first time i noticed that my period had started everything that came out was completely red. After several hours I took the birth control pill and that was when i noticed the brown stringy fluid. My period usually lasts about five days, this time it lasted six, and then today the pad I wore looked like i had pooped my pants. Do you have any idea what could be wrong, or if i could possibly pregnant?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Almost all birth control pills come with side effects, especially menstrual irregularities and inter-menstrual bleeding. So the changes you are experiencing are due to to birth control without doubt.

I do not suspect pregnancy and if at all you have had a history of unprotected sexual contact prior to the initiation of birth control or during the first few days while on the birth control, then you should immediately discontinue the birth control and report to your doctor for a thorough evaluation before re-intitiation of the birth control (i.e. after pregnancy has been ruled out).

Best wishes.
