Could Swelling In Ankles And Wrist Be Related To Lung Cancer?

Both my ankles and wrist are swollen. I noticed this three years ago while going through extensive health exams. I had lung cancer but anytime I asked a doctor they just seemed to be more interested in the current problem. Could this be cancer related?

Hello,

Some cancer treatments, mainly chemotherapy medicines may cause water retention in the body. The swelling due to water retention are most likely to be seen in the ankles, wrist, legs, face, etc. However, there may be other medical conditions that may cause swelling in the ankles and wrists like OA, RA, gout, liver, heart or kidney problems, etc. You are suggested to get a follow up clinical examination by your treating doctor.

Get blood tests, urinalysis and X-ray, CT, MRI done to detect the pathology causing the symptoms. You will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, to reduce water retention, take natural diuretics (food rich in diuretics), limit the salt intake, do regular walking and exercises to improve circulation. Take anti-inflammatory food (olive oil, fishes - salmon, mackeral, walnuts, tomatoes, etc) to reduce swelling.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
