Could Shooting Pain In Head After An Injury Be A Sign Of Danger?

A week ago I fell backwards and my head hit first on the cement. Now a week later I had sharp pains in my head on top of my head on the right side. Little shooting pains all day yesterday. Woke up very tired this morning not with pain but not sure it feels just right.

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. You are having severe headache after few days of head injury. It should not be ignored. Sometimes, head injury can cause slow and persistent accumulation of blood in subdural space. It is known as chronic subdural hematoma. It can be serious if it causes mass effect or some focal deficit.

Chronic subdural hepatoma can be ruled out by NCCT head. If there is mass effect, it must be surgically evacuated. If small in size, observation is needed till it dissolves.

Another possibility is of some unrelated illness to trauma head. It can be stress headache, migraine. If NCCT head is normal, other possibilities can be considered.

You should consult neurosurgeon for evaluation. At home, you can take tablet paracetamol or diclofenac sodium after proper prescription. Avoid strenuous activities.
Hope it will help you. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
