Could Pain In Upper Chest While Swallowing Be Due To Injury?
My 16 year old son lifts weights in conditioning class and is now complaining of pain in his upper right chest area when he swallows or hiccups...he says it feels as if the pain in towards the back, like something is pushing in on his esophagus and/or windpipe when swallowing or hiccuping. He has eased up on his lifting as a result of the pain and my insistence. My concern is that he overextended himself (too much weight, too many reps, etc.) and possibly injured his back. Should we go for an x-ray? Pediatrician? or Ortho? Thank you! Concerned Mom

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query. As he is having pain while swallowing, hiccups it can be most likely esophagitis due to gastric reflux. If there is injury from weight lifting then there will be localized tenderness some where. A examination with physician is well appreciated. Proton pump inhibitors like rabeprazole for short term will be helpful in such case. Avoid irritating foods and drinks. Carbonated drinks , fried and fatty foods should be avoided. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
